Shofar Sundae

Shofar (small)High Holiday time, including services, is meant to be an inclusive experience for everyone – and that includes children.  Shofar Sundae, a brainchild of Chabad Youth, was an innovative program to provide specialized Rosh Hashanah services for tots until pre-teen.

On Sunday, second day of Rosh Hashanah, scores of children from the greater S. Barbara community heard the Shofar and had some tasty ice cream – all conditions met for an educationally fun Shofar Sundae!  Additionally the children were able to participate in age appropriate prayers and activities; the ideal way for children to get involved in the New Year.

Rabbi Zalmy Kudan, director of Chabad Youth, appreciates the need for children’s needs to be met in our community.  “The future of tomorrow, as well as the continuation of the Jewish people hinges on the children of today.  Our goal is to show the children of our community that Judaism is applicable and fun.  Services aren’t boring, but within the right framework and setting they are a meaningful experience for everyone.”

Rabbi Zalmy, with his wife Shterna and one year old son, moved to S. Barbara to fill a vital need in the S. Barbara Jewish Community – Youth Director.  They bring with them years of experience in child programming and activities.  “We like to say, Chabad Youth is where Jewish Children have Jewish Fun”, Rabbi Zalmy said with a chuckle.

Parents and children walked (and crawled!) out of  Shofar Sundae with smiles on their faces, ice cream on their lips (and shirts) and a deeper appreciation for their Jewish heritage.  One of the children said, “Shofar Sundae was a cool way to do the Rosh Hashana service, and I learned something too!”  “This year’s Rosh Hashanah services were particularly meaningful to me.  I love that my daughter has become comfortable with the services”, said one proud parent.

Chabad Youth has many exciting activities planned for all of the upcoming Jewish holidays, including “Pizza in the Hut” on Sukkot.
