Levik's Upshernish

Over 250 people gathered together in the Corwin Pavilion to celebrate Levik's Upshernish.  Friends and Family, including his extended UCSB family, took turns snipping off Levik's hair.  Levik in turn handed each participant a chocolate "I'm 3" lollypop and some Tzedakah to put into the charity box in his hand.

The Torah says that “a person is [compared to] the tree of the field” (Deuteronomy 20:19). Just as it is forbidden to benefit from the produce of a tree for the first three years after it is planted, so too we do not cut a boy’s hair until he is three years old. From the fourth year and onwards we begin to enjoy the fruit of the tree; and from this point onwards the world begins to benefit from the Torah and mitzvot of a young child.

The Upshernish, with origins in the Talmud and Kaballah, signifies Levik's formal start of his education. Levik led the overflow crowd in saying a verse from the Torah, recited the Aleph Bet, and licked honey off of and Aleph Bet Chart.  G‑d willing Levik's education will be as sweet as the honey he licked!

Mazal Tov and may we only continue to share in Simchas together!
